We’re wrapping up a long series focused on job interviews and networking. During interview prep, we’ve talked extensively about techniques like Who-What-Win where you consider WHO you’re talking to and WHAT is most important to them. In today’s post I’ll be discussing “Shifting Into Why.”

The most common question asked at a networking event is “WHAT do you do?” (For more in-depth networking advice – how to introduce yourself, addressing your audience, and more, tune into my Holiday Networking Webinar happening next week) When connecting with your network and interviewers, it’s important to talk about WHAT you do and HOW you do it.

A lot of people stop at the WHO/WHAT/HOW when job seeking – when arguably, your WHY is even more important.

Tuning into your WHY

Whether you’re looking for a job or simply looking to show up even better in your current job, tuning into your WHY can be the tipping point.

When you share your why – in a job interview, in a sales call, or in a team meeting – people connect to you on a human level. Demonstrating the meaning behind your work shows your interviewer, prospective client, boss or colleagues that you’re not just good at your job – but you care about it deeply.

In a job interview, sharing your why in a compelling manner can put you over the top. In your current role or in your business, your why can sustain you.

I’ve just experienced a huge loss. It’s caused me a sense of existential crisis and I’ve been deeply pondering the meaning of my own life. When I circle back to my own why, I’m able to continue to show up in my business because I believe deeply in what I do. I’m able to continue to serve and connect with my clients and my tribe.
