Find Opportunity Everywhere. Say your friend has cancer. It is bad news all around. Does anybody benefit from this diagnosis? Well, it is never good news, but some doctor’s livelihoods are, of course, based on just that disease. Same with gastritis, plantar fasciitis, even dermatitis! Even when there isn’t anything wrong, physicians provide preventative medicine. Don’t forget the sports physical! In those cases, they solve the “problem” by providing peace of mind.

Employers hire people (and pay them!) to provide solutions, whether they use the word “problem” or not. If you approach every business from that perspective and can apply yourself physically or mentally in such a way as to solve their dilemma, you’ve created opportunity to serve them. Congratulations! You’re a doctor: Dr. Problem-Solver, otherwise known as a paid employee.

This is the time to get out there in a big way! Anyone you speak to could hold the key to an opportunity. Get back in touch with every contact you can think of, everyone you’ve ever known, personally or professionally. Let them know you are ready to work and open to opportunities. Make it clear that you are eager to be of service in any capacity. Volunteer. Tweet. Attend networking meetings. At a Chamber of Commerce function, you’ll meet business owners and, if you pay attention, you might put your finger on the pulse of those businesses’ needs.
